This Is NOT a 4th of July Post

What does this picture have to do with the 4th of July?  Absolutely Nothing.

Okay this is not a 4th of July post. Why? Because I couldn't think of anything.
Seems to be a habit with me doesn't it?
Anyway what this picture does have to do with is that other summer phenomenon called Vacation Bible School.
That's right, churches are gearing up for the annual craft making, storytelling, bible scripture memorizing extravaganza! I am not exaggerating. These days they are a production. Not that there is anything wrong with that. My church was made up like a market place in ancient Greece where our Pastor played the Apostle Paul. Fun was had by all.
Hey if it shares the Good News of Jesus Christ and everyone has fun doing it, I'm all for it.
It's just not what we did in my day. Hence the picture.
This is a craft project from one of my years in Vacation Bible School, and the only reason I still have it is because, you guessed it, my Mom kept it.
I have mentioned that you mothers keep the weirdest things right?
Now don't expect me to tell some heartwarming story behind this thing because the truth is...I don't remember. Don't judge me. Just wait until you're never mind how old and see how well you remember every little thing you did at seven...or was it eight?
Truth to tell, I barely remember making the thing. Well I didn't make it, I painted it, and it's not even the paint I painted. If that makes sense.
You see years went by and the paint began to fall off the ceramic. So my Mom had my sister, the artist who had paint, repaint it because she wanted to keep it. I think it was originally a red background with blue sleeves...like I said I don't remember, and I wasn't offended. Mom wanted to keep it, that's what counts.
So what do I remember about this project? Well we were in the room where the baptismal pool was, and we would sneak up the stairs when the teacher's back was turned to try to look down into it.  Hey it was big mysterious stuff. Of course the lights were off so it looked like a big black hole that went on forever into the depths of...never mind. Hey, I went to an old church, it was not only mysterious, it was scary to a seven (or was it eight?) year old. Anyway, we were young children with big imaginations, not helped by the fact that this church was big on the fire and brimstone teachings. I got over it. When I was about sixteen.
It's funny now, really.
I know I'm twisted.
Anyway, anyone else got some favorite Vacation Bible School stories they want to share? Hopefully a bit more heartwarming?
 Happy 4th!

Mystery Writer C.L. Ragsdale is the author of The Reboot Files a Christian Cozy Mystery Series. Other stories are also in the works which can only be described as fun and somewhat quirky. She has a degree in Theatre Arts which greatly influenced her writing style. She has also worked in various fields of business as a secretary. Yes that is where the idea for her villainous character came from, but she is not an evil mastermind. Although some of her former employers might disagree. This practical experience was beneficial in mastering her writing skills and also gaining valuable technical knowledge which she uses liberally in her plots. It also didn't hurt that she is a big fan of the old Scooby Doo cartoons. Read the books if you want to know what that means.

  1. I was saved at the age of eight in Vacation Bible School. But I think I was baptized February 26, 1956 so I'm still trying to figure that out. You're right - VBS us such a production now but I guess the kids love it. When I was principal, I created a teachers lounge with food, comfy furniture and patience pills (candy). We had a great time. Ah, the good old days...

  2. I've worked many a Vacation Bible School! When my daughters were little, I was very much involved. We came home every day tired, but happy.
I didn't come to know the Lord until I was 28 years old, if you can believe that. But I wish I had gone as a child. VBS is a wonderful experience that brings both children and adults closer to the Lord.
