Holiday Gift Guide for Cozy Mystery Lovers

Hello, dear readers!

I hope this holiday season finds you and your family well and safe. In these turbulent times, I'm reminded that we must treasure each day God gives us.  As we press on, Thanksgiving seems to be officially blended in with Christmas as more and more people choose to decorate early, including myself. With traveling more to grown children's homes for the holidays, I find myself compelled to decorate earlier every year when the holidays get closer. Now, instead of decorating the day after Thanksgiving, we will be having our tree-trimming party the weekend before. Anyone else experiencing this change of events?

The next thing to start thinking about is gifts and what to give. I find parents are the most challenge. My mom doesn't need a thing, but she does love to read. Books bring a different world to readers and provide great entertainment for hours. I count a new book as a definite treat!

If you'd like to give a friend or a loved one a gift that keeps on giving, the Jillian Bradley mysteries might be a good choice. Rated G with no profanity or offensive scenes, they are the perfect gift choice for readers on your list. Books range in price from $7.99 to $11.99 for paperbacks and FREE to $3.99 for eBooks. Not bad when you consider one can purchase the entire series for under $99.00 + tx and s/h. (Amazon Prime members enjoy free s/h!)

Besides the 10 book series, there are short stories about Jillian and Teddy included in the holiday anthologies "A Cup of Cozy" series, and the latest one out "Happy Homicides." The "Cup of Cozy" anthologies include recipes and menus, and recipes and crafts abound in the bonus issue of "Happy Homicides."

Here is a complete list of books and buy links:

Whatever gifts we give and receive, may we be reminded of the greatest gift of all - Jesus, God's only begotten Son.

Happy Holidays!

How It All Began

By Nancy Jill Thames

"Ann Fieldman" Serving Afternoon Tea
In 2001 Murder in Half Moon Bay was my very first attempt at writing a book. I love murder mysteries but was burned out with the authors I had been reading, so I decided to write a mystery of my own. The timing was not conducive to complete my story, due to raising a second family born to us in later years, until October 2009. The Half Moon Bay Review showed an interest in my blog featuring chapters from the manuscript I'd begun as a way to finish the book, and wanted to do an interview. I agreed, wrote the final chapters and published the book as an indie author in June of 2010. Since that time, I have written six additional books in the series, with more on the way.
Club Lounge Fare at the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay

My inspiration for Jillian Bradley and her Yorkie companion came from staying at The Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay where my husband and I were attending an off-site board meeting for his company. I began taking notes of the surroundings and used my imagination to create a protagonist that might be a guest at a gardening conference.

I used my husband's name Ted (he wanted to be a character) for her little dog, Teddy, since she would be a widow. Walter, the young valet and later detective character, was a combination of a valet at the Ritz-Carlton and a nursery delivery man unloading his plants at a WalMart where I shopped.

Jillian's Garden Club Having Lunch
The Original Garden Club
Jillian's friends from her Garden Club help solve the mysteries in several of the books. The Garden Club actually still exists to this day. We meet occasionally for - you guessed it - afternoon tea!  The photo on the left shows me at a heavier weight, thus the attention to portions in my books! Inspiration for the characters are "Nicole King" sitting on my right, "Dominique Summers" on Nicole's right,  and  "Ann Fieldman" sitting on the end of the bench. (Not their real names of course!)
As I continued to travel with my husband, I found more settings to write about and continue to dream up scenarios for Jillian and Teddy to solve mysteries. Writing is a new journey for me, but it's turning out to be a rewarding one.

Have a great weekend!

See you in my books!

Lick Your Calf Over Again

By Nancy Jill Thames
Ever have to start all over on a project? That's what happened to me this week. A little background first.

When we were growing up, my father was full of daily quotes. Whenever we children finished a chore poorly, he would say, "If you want something done halfway, ask a child to do it. If you want it done right, do it yourself." Or, on a positive note, "Life's hard by the yard, but it's a cinch by the inch." Stuff like that - all the time!

But one of his particular favorites was, "You'll have to lick your calf over again." Now, he would usually say this after I'd finished cleaning the bathroom sink and the faucets didn't sparkle enough for him. What can I say? He was in the military.

This week I was doing a rewrite on Book 7 "The Ruby of Siam" and thought I'd be clever by omitting commas where I believed they weren't necessary. Wrong! Now I have to go back and lick my calf over again.

It wouldn't have been so bad except I was in a hotel room and had thrown all the papers on the floor in a huge pile. I had to sort them all over again - 178 pages. Now I have to reinsert the commas I deleted.

I suppose I wanted to share this because sometimes readers have no idea what writers go through to publish a book. And guess what? It doesn't matter. Writing is fun! Plus, I'm learning as I go.

I hope you'll enjoy my new book when I eventually get it launched. Keep your fingers crossed that I don't make any more stupid errors in judgement!  Thanks for your patience, dear readers.

Have a great weekend!

The Time I Cheated on the Cotton Ball and Spatula Game

By Nancy Jill Thames

Since we've been doing book giveaways this week and last, I've been thinking about offering up one myself. There's St. Patrick's day on Sunday, yes, that would be a good reason...but my conscious was pricked in the meantime while trying to decide.

Years ago, in my wedding and baby shower days, we played a game called "Scoop the Cotton Balls." Blindfolded, the contestant had to scoop as many cotton balls off the floor with a spatula as she could into a bowl. The person who scooped the most was declared the winner. And I wanted to win. So badly did I want to win that when the blindfold was tied around my eyes and I could see underneath, I made the decision not to say anything and began scooping as many fluffy balls into the bowl as I could!

As if the game wasn't funny enough, watching us grovel on the floor with a spatula trying to scoop up cotton balls and put them into a bowl, the hostess removed the cotton balls for the last contestant, and we watched her scooping up air!

Well, I won. I think it was for the first time in my life, and at the time it felt wonderful! I was a winner!! Years passed until this week, and I thought about when I had cheated. I was writing a scene in "The Ruby of Siam" and had to decide if my protagonist should lie or not. Being a Christian, I made her say something that would throw off the scent, but it was the truth. My heart was pricked over the Cotton Ball and Spatula win. I will ask forgiveness and make amends.

Now for the amends! As a token of my sincerity, if you would like a free e-copy of one of my books, please join the site as a follower and leave your e-mail so I can gift you. I will choose two winners at random and announce you next Friday. Here are your choices - please mention the one you want:

MURDER IN HALF MOON BAY  Book 1

Did the woman jump or was she pushed over the balcony? When the shocking murder disrupts the West Coast Garden Club Society's second annual conference, Jillian Bradley and her garden club friends join with Chief Frank Viscuglia to find the killer. Jillian and her friends move through the Ritz-Carlton hotel to private mansions searching for the truth, pausing for afternoon tea along the way, of course. The unlikely team helps the chief uncover a series of mysterious events that lead to solving several murders, both past and present. Could it be the mean spirited conference director? Perhaps it's the wealthy widow on the make for her next husband; or maybe the killer is the haughty business woman who shows no regard for her brow beaten husband.
Murder in Half Moon Bay, first book in the Jillian Bradley Mystery series, introduces Jillian's little  companion 'Teddy,' a Yorkie who falls prey to danger but rises to become sleuth dog in the next book.

THE GHOST ORCHID MURDER  Book 2

It's been eight years since gardening columnist Jillian Bradley helped solve a string of murders in Half Moon Bay. But when a friend and colleague in Scottsdale, Arizona finds a young technical assistant dead on the floor of his private office, Jillian doesn't hesitate to answer his plea for help in the investigation. After all, a $2 million research grant depends on it.
Together with Detective Jack Noble and Jillian's clue sniffing dog, Teddy, the three set out to track the killer who leaves a porcelain orchid over the wound as the only clue. Even though it means personal sacrifice for Jillian, she is determined to uncover the truth. A faith-based novel.

FROM THE CLUTCHES OF EVIL Book 3

Christmas – the busiest time of the year! And on top of everything, Jillian is throwing an engagement party for two dear friends. But on a final errand before the party begins Jillian witnesses a horrific car crash and notices two witnesses leaving the scene of the accident. She and Teddy pull a survivor from the wreckage, and together they attempt to solve the mystery of the amnesia victim, a 17-year-old boy she and Teddy take under their wing. After one of the witnesses is found brutally murdered, Jillian discovers an ominous connection between the boy and a string of heinous murders in a nearby remote farming community. And when Jillian stumbles across a mysterious compound, she is determined to unlock old family secrets to solve the mystery of his identity even though taking the risk creates the ultimate test for her and Teddy's survival.

THE MARK OF EDEN Book 4

After a frantic call from a couple on their honeymoon, Jillian returns to Half Moon Bay to help. Two elderly men have been found dead in their recliners, and now another man is missing—the distraught father of the bride - Jillian's personal assistant. Their investigation must be incognito since the groom is a detective and can’t work on the case due to conflict of interest. The clues the threesome find lead Jillian and Teddy to take a cruise to Catalina Island, but it’s only an entrée into a strange clinical world, where she almost becomes a victim herself before she identifies who is responsible for a bizarre series of deaths. Will Teddy be in time to save the day?

PACIFIC BEACH  Book 5

The quaint surfing town of Pacific Beach becomes a destination for murder when a young starlet and her mother are found brutally murdered at the Pacific Terrace hotel where Jillian’s family reunion is taking place. Their reunion takes a terrifying turn when Jillian's nephew is arrested as a prime suspect and Jillian must move quickly to find the real killer and prove her nephew's innocence. There is no shortage of suspects, including an unsavory doctor who attended the popular teen star and a mysterious guest at the party where the starlet dies. But why is her mother murdered with her? Working at Jillian's side to find the perpetrator of these bizarre killings are her faithful assistant Cecilia Montoya, and Teddy, Jillian's Yorkie companion who sniffs out his own clue.

     WAITING FOR SANTA  Book 6

The family has gathered to celebrate Christmas at Jillian’s house in Clover Hills, but Jillian’s plans for a lovely Christmas Eve are rudely interrupted by a power failure. And a homicide. Not only does Aunt Jillian find herself with a house full of company to entertain in the dark, but she also receives a call from Detective Walter Montoya who finds himself in the dark trying to solve the bizarre murder of a worker found dead in a maintenance shed at the power station. With Teddy at her side, Jillian is determined to solve the mystery.

Have a wonderful weekend, dear readers!

Shotgun Start-the Reason for the Season

By Nancy Jill Thames

If you're like me, thoughts of the Christmas holidays now loom first and foremost your my mind. When should we decorate the house? Or, what does everyone want for Christmas? Turkey or ham (or both) for Christmas Day? Well, Today is Black Friday, the big Christmas shopping kick-off tradition. This launched after my time I'm happy to say. For some, like my sweet sister-in-law, it is a day looked forward to for weeks! For her, whose language of love is giving gifts, this is understandable.

Gift giving is, sigh, is not how I show love. Shopping for others is difficult and why my family prefers cash, or gift cards. As a grandma, maybe I'm not alone. But when it comes to Christmas, my thoughts turn to God's perfect gift of his only son, Jesus.

Joseph and Mary's baby is still the most perfect gift anyone could ever give or receive. I accepted Him at the age of eight and a half, and followed Him in baptism the following Sunday evening, February 26, 1956. After I was raised from those waters, joy and purpose filled my life as I found ways to serve Him.  God gave me the gift of music and administration so I became the department pianist and secretary in my Sunday school class.  His gifts, in turn, became my gifts to share.

Although material gift-giving is hard for me, I've found a way to share God's gift of the Savior with others. By weaving the message of His unspeakable love into my stories, hopefully, this gift will reach people who may have never understood how simple it is to receive the Christ child.

As we begin to celebrate this year, let us remember the reason for the season and be ready to share the gift of Jesus' birth.

May I be the first to wish all of you, dear readers, a Merry Christmas! It begins today. Oh, just a gift idea: "Waiting for Santa" releases next week. For only $2.99, it might be an excellent choice to e-gift your friends and family this holiday season.

Give Me the Simple Life

By Nancy Jill Thames

For years, I spent hours upon hours of precious time gardening and tending to our white Maltese, Chloe. She had to be rinsed off after tracking in grass and dirt from every  potty break in our back yard. This happened at least five times a day. That, coupled with all the time spent preparing fresh, healthy meals for the little sweet thing, and finding suitable care while traveling with my husband, I finally reached my wits end. A decision was made (much to my husband's chagrin - he loved the dog) to take Chloe with us on a flight to visit our grandchildren in California and leave her there. Quite equitable, really - they needed a dog and I needed freedom. Voila! Funny thing is, now they have me fly out to baby-sit the grand kids and the dog! But at least I'm not rinsing off paws five times a day!

The other major decision made to simplify my life was to get rid of every houseplant and outdoor potted plant we owned (except for one, the geranium pictured in the photo). Living in California, gardening was a pleasurable past time - in Texas, the heat and humidity curtails any such enthusiasm, so only native plants and hardy variety of roses live in our yard. The loveliest thing about having a simple life? More time to spend what I love doing - writing cozy mysteries!

Now that I've dealt with simplifying pets and gardening, I only need to figure out how to simplify housework, laundry, and cooking. Fear not, I'm working on it.

How do you deal with simplifying your life?

Nancy Jill Thames is the author of "Jillian Bradley Mysteries," Christian fiction based on travel adventures with her husband. The stories reflect Nancy Jill's love of art and serving afternoon tea, which has earned her the title of “Queen of Afternoon Tea.” She is listed numerous times on the Author Watch Bestseller's List and won awards for her blogs. Nancy Jill is a Texas Longhorn, with a fine arts degree from University of Texas in Austin, where she resides with her husband. The author donates 10% of book sales to the Central Texas SPCA-a no kill animal shelter.

Nancy Jill is busy working on book 6 Waiting for Santa, a murder mystery taking place on Christmas Eve near Jillian Bradley’s home in Clover Hills.
