How To Support An Author's New Book

Ways You Can Help Your Favorite Author

1. Buy the book to read or buy it for a friend or a gift. Books are a great gift that aren't often thought of.

2. Face the book out at bookstores. Simply rearrange a bookstore shelf so that your friend's book faces out to make it much more noticable.

3. When you actually read the book, read it where people can see it.  Read it in public. Read it on the subway. Read it in the aisle seat of a plane. Read it on the deck of a cruise ship. After all, don't you find yourself looking at what others are reading when you pass by? I do!

4. Ask a bookstore employee where the book is located. When entering a bookstore, do not look for the book. Go to the bookstore customer service clerk and ask them about the book. They will find it in their system and lead you to the book. My hope is that if several people do this at the same bookstore, then the employee(s) will take notice of the title.

5. Leave a review on Amazon or BN.com or Goodreads or all. Reviews are still very important. Think about it. If you come by a new book and see it has a 2.0 stars on Amazon, would you buy it? On some level, that silly rating does affect me and my decision - and my guess is that it affects you, too. So it's crucial that, when you read a book and enjoy it, you leave a review on Amazon or BN.com or Goodreads or all. Those first 10-20 reviews really matter and can set a book on the right path. (Note: You can leave the same review on all the sites to save time.)

6. "Like" the book on Amazon, or "Like" the author's facebook fan page. I head from a literary agent once that more "Likes" a book had on its Amazon page, the more frequent it turned up in Amazon's comparable titles elsewhere. Getting your personal friends to "Like" another friends page is an easy favor to ask, as it requires no money.

7. Reserve a copy at the library.  An employee here at Writer's Digest Books once told me that if all copies of a book are reserved from our county library before the title comes out, the system has a way of noticing popularity and marking the book as one for "more orders."

8. Attend the book release party if there is one, and bring a warm body or two. It is to help the author's self-esteem. It's lonely to have a book release party or a local signing with low attendance. If you already bought a copy, bring that book to be signed.

9. Spread news of the book through your social media channels.  When the author mentions it on Facebook, share the news with your soical circles and include a small note about what the book is and why they should buy it. In other words, spreading the word by saying "My friend got published!" is nice - but it's better to say, "This new book by my hilarious friend is a great gift for dads who are raising daughters. Laugh-out-loud-funny stuff for all fathers to enjoy!" See how the second one targets people in a simple-yet-specific way? Do this kind of targeting when you spread the word via Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, or blogs.

10. If you have media contacts or know people of influence, arrange a connection.  This is the best thing you can do and probably the biggest way you can truly influence the life of the book and the success of the author. If you're married to the cousin of a local news personality, it's exactly that kind of connection that serves as a great introduction between author and TV host. If you know a book reviewer at a newspaper in Boston, say so. If your old college buddy now runs the biggest reading club of all of Central California, try and help your author friend's book be a future choice in that club. Utilize your network!

Scone But Not Forgotten--By Linda Kozar

When the weather is damp, cold and gloomy, there's nothing like a cup of good Irish Breakfast Tea and a warm scone fresh out of the oven, to warm the heart and clear the cobwebs from your head.

And...a cup of tea and a lovely scone is a wonderful way for a writer to kick-start a productive day.

I'm on the reward plan. I set little goals and give myself brass rings to keep me going throughout the writing process. Though this technique might not work for everyone, it sure works for me.

Find out what works for you--whatever it might be. The little things, the simple things seem to be the best muses to the creative soul.

Enjoy!

Irish Raisin Scones

2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 egg beaten
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup milk
1 cup raisins

Mix ingredients and knead on floured board until smooth (1 minute). Roll out and cut with large circle cookie cutter. Place on greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Makes eighteen, 2-inch scones.

Kindle? Nook? Sony? or Kobo?

By Nancy Jill Thames

Ereaders - take your pick!
Hang onto your hats, dear readers. Things are changing right before your eyes! The other night I began reading an old paperback in bed. I confess, I thought holding a book again instead of reading on a device would be a cozy experience. Instead, I realized the book had yellowed to where I almost couldn't read it, and I needed a light to see the pages. Oh, dear me!

I will confess knowing enough about ereaders and bottom lines to tell you, from what I've read, the four best choices are a Kindle, Nook, Sony or Kobo. And unless you are a "techie" these choices are your best bet.

In researching information I did learn that using your iPad or other tablets are not the best way to go. It's due to the weight and short battery life. Okay, so I use my iPad to read. But it is difficult unless you're reading on a plane with a pull down tray to support the device.

Simply put, you want a Kindle if you're buying books from Amazon, a Nook if you're buying books from Barnes and Noble, and a Kobo or Sony if you're buying books from most other online sites. Notice I said most other online sites. That's a whole different story. Click the link under the photo for a better understanding of ereaders.

In any case, it's my opinion that eventually ereaders are the future. Libraries already have ebooks available and add more every day. Schools are using them as early as Kindergarten and even college textbooks are now online.

More importantly, the choices we now have are endless, with the self-publishing industry booming! We at Cozy Mystery Magazine appreciate your readership and understand the thousands of choices of cozy mysteries out there now. Thank you for reading our books and giving us wonderful reviews. By doing so you make our books more visible to audiences around the world.

What ereader do you use? Pros? Cons?

Have a lovely weekend, dear readers.

See you in my books!

Chasing Lady Midnight - Chapter 4

Chapter 4 – Exit, Stage Down! On the face of it, the cause of our shock might not be readily apparent to everyone. Because it’s a woman, not a superwoman, just a normal person standing in the midst of the chaos looking way scarier than any super villain I’ve ever seen on TV.
Did I really just say just a normal person? I never knew how good I had it when I was “just” normal. Until I wasn’t anymore.
Mamas don’t let your babies grow up to be superheroes, at least not these days.
Anyway she’s a well-dressed middle age black woman, slightly rumpled, her hat askew on her head, but still maintaining a sense of dignity. She’s also staring down all of us super beings and somehow managing to be intimidating. At least I’m scared, and Ballistic Attack looks like he desperately wants to climb into that manhole with Protostar. Max is holding it together fairly well except he does take a step or two back. I assume they’re surprised she’s there because she is normal. I’m surprised because it’s her, the woman who got me into this mess.
Although to be fair it wasn’t her fault. She just had the bad luck to get caught up in the middle of a bank robbery and when the scumbags decided they needed a hostage she got picked. I was simply practicing to see if I could use my powers in public without being noticed. Yes, I can hide in the shadows too, but to be safe I had put on the costume. First time in the thing and wouldn’t you know it? Suddenly three fleeing men appear before me, with guns, one of them pointed at this poor woman’s head as they drag her along with them.
I had to do something. So I did the superhero thing and saved the day. I used the shadows to get the guns, pulled the hostage away from her captor, and set the three no goods into the back of the nearest police car. All in record time and with no one getting hurt, thank you very much. I had pulled the hostage towards me and bent down to make sure she was okay, which she was fortunately, but that was when Protostar blasted me from behind and started the whole drama.
You see The Squad is always on the lookout for an UNA, short for Unknown Non-Affiliate, what they call a super whatever who is not registered in their rosters on one side or the other. Now I know that sounds really creepy, but trust me it’s much, much worse.
So now to see this same unknown woman standing in the middle of a super fight, looking more mad than scared of any of us was a little disconcerting.
“Ma’am you need to evacuate this location immediately…” Metallica Max finally started authoritatively when the woman stopped him. She didn’t shout, but said with deadly calm, “Don’t mess with me sonny, I’ve had a DAY and you are dangerously close to working my last nerve. Just what do think you are doing anyway?”
Now this is where I think The Squad’s training regime falls short. Supers kids start their training at a very young age, and as a result they have very little contact with the general public. The result of which is they learn how to interact with other super beings, but they don’t have a clue on how to relate to a normal person.
As a result Max, not expecting confrontation, wasn’t sure how to react to it. What he should have done was to be a respectful, calming influence and try to convince her to remove herself from what he was certain was harm’s way. What he did was to look down his nose at her and get all super superior.
Bad idea.
“You do not seem to understand. I am Metallica Max, member of The Protection Platoon and under the authority of The Mighty Superhero Security Squad I order you to…”
“You WHAT?”
As his antagonist puts her hands on her hips and looks ready to take his head off at any minute, Max does what he should have done in first place and shuts up.
“I know who you are,” she continued, “And I know who you work for, and I know you don’t have the authority to order me off a public street my taxes paid for and which you are in the process of tearing up. Do YOU understand?”
Max, now totally without confidence, says nothing but nods quickly.
“Now back to my original question. Why are attacking this poor girl? Because she has a better sense of style than you do?”
I always did think that Max’s red and gold outfit was a bit too gaudy. Max, however, is too scared to do what he usually does when anyone points this out to him and take offense.
“Well,” he offered weakly, “She’s a criminal and we were ordered to…”
“Criminal? She didn’t do anything wrong!”
Finally! Someone agrees with me! I could have kissed her, if I wasn’t still behind my shields that is, and if I wasn’t afraid she’d hit me or something.
“She stopped and saved me from real bad guys. Unlike you other so-called hero types who never will give a normal person the time of day. Oh be a big time politician or business tycoon with a splinter in their finger and you people are there in a second with a first aid kit. Be a nobody like me taken by gunpoint by no-goods robbing a bank and you don’t even have time to give a look see.”
“I assure you,” he tried again but with a slight stammer this time, “We have ample reason to believe…”
“Okay, so what did she do? I haven’t seen her picture on the 10 most wanted super villains list. I should know you all broadcast it often enough. Some special update always interrupting my viewing pleasure.”
It was then that Max’s expression went blank, making it obvious that he had no idea what I was supposed to have done.
Oops.
It is then that all of my suspicions were confirmed. The Platoon had been set up. They had been dispatched with Tracker once I was identified as an UNA. I’m not even surprised by how fast they got to my location, these are super control freaks we are talking about. Anyway depending on how it went down either the kudos would go to Tracker’s superior leadership or the blame would be put on the young inexperienced team. Lovely people my sister and her friends work for. Not that they any choice, they just don’t know that.
At Max’s indecision the woman pounced, “That’s what I thought. No good reason whatsoever am I right?”
Fortunately for Max, my sister quite unknowingly comes to his rescue.
“Hey,” I hear Protostar call out plaintively from under the man hole, “Can someone get me out of here? Please?”
Ballistic Attack and Metallica Max look at each other obviously both too terrified to move. Finally, they both look at me with pleading eyes. I feel like saying, “Hey, I thought I was supposed to be the bad guy?”
But I don’t. Because that is my sister down that hole. Even if no one but me knows it.
Besides, she did say please.
So once again using their shadows I pull back the truck and open the man hole. I have to admit to being a little worried when instead of flying out, she climbs out. I hope she’s okay.
However, at that moment I notice two flyers in the distance heading in our direction fast. Dark blue spandex and black capes can mean only one thing, Captain Courageous and his sidekick the ever stoic Sergeant Strong (these guys really need to a hire a writer) are rushing to the scene to perform damage control.
That means the media, the police, and worse, other super whoevers are not far behind.
It is definitely time for me to make an exit.
Ballistic Attack is still the closest to me and is distracted by Protostar and the victim who is still reaming them all royally (It’s nice that one person is on my side). So I drop my shields and take a few steps forward until I am in his shadow. Sensing me he turns quickly. I smile, give a little wave and drop straight down into the sidewalk.
Hey, it’s a cool way to travel when I can get it to work.

The King Cake: A Royal Tradition--By Linda Kozar

Though I've lived in Texas now for quite a while, I grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana and hold a special place in my heart for the state where I was born. Louisiana is a gumbo of people, cultures and traditions from France, Spain Africa, England, Germany, Italy, American Indian and more. One of our favorite Louisiana traditions is the King Cake, a tri-colored, rather oddly-shaped confection at first glance. The cake is not like other cakes. King Cakes are not really cakes at all, but more akin to bread. And they're delicious!

Why are they called King Cakes? The royal name is taken from the three kings in the bible, the kings who visited the baby Jesus to honor and offer homage to Him. The Catholic Epiphany is commemorated on January 6th and celebrates the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child. the eve of the Epiphany (January 5th) is known as Twelfth Night and the twelve days of Christmas are counted from Christmas Eve to this night.

The Mardi Gras season begins from the end of the twelve days of Christmas up to Mardi Gras day or "Fat Tuesday" as it is also known. Fat Tuesday is the the before the start of Lent. The tradition is more or less a last hurrah before the lenten season, a solemn time of self-denial and prayerful introspection.

Mardi Gras on the other hand, is a day set aside for excess and indulgence. And King Cake is quite an indulgence. Many people like to throw King Cake parties or bring them to work or school to share with  everyone. Indulging in a King Cake is also like a game of Russian Roulette (with less dire consequences), for hidden somewhere within the circle is a little plastic baby. People who  are familiar with the cake know not to bite hard into one. This is a cake to be nibbled at--carefully. Any bite might turn up the baby, and that baby symbolizes the baby Jesus. The baby also indicates that YOU must buy the next King Cake to share, a tradition that some believe originated in Portugal.

Most people are good sports about it and dutifully pick up the next cake. But some people, and you know who you are, remedy this situation buy hiding the baby in their mouth or discretely placing it into a napkin. These cheapskates always want a piece of King Cake, but never want to go to the bother or expense of picking one up.

Though some of the bakeries I used to favor as a source for King Cakes are no longer in business thanks to Hurricane Katrina, I'm still fond of Gambino's Bakery (see picture above), and Randazzo's. Curiously enough, a small bakery in Mississippi named Paul's is the first bakery to incorporate fillings in the cakes--cream cheese, strawberry, apple, etc.--now a popular addition, though not traditional.

But no matter what kind of King Cake you favor, the tradition is the best part about indulging. The King Cake is a social and cultural icon in Louisiana. I've ended up with very many King Cake babies over the years. At a loss as to what to do with them all, I collected them from all the drawers, pencil boxes and other places they wound up and decided to display them in a plant on my window sill. A real conversation starter, my King Cake Baby Plant is as unconventional as the holiday itself. And I love it!

The Mystique of Old Blue Willow

By Nancy Jill Thames

Certain things make our lives cozy. For me, those include comfy furniture, someone to talk to, a good book to read and pretty dishes. Over the years I've had many sets, but none so cherished as my Old Blue Willow
Hollywood often used these dishes as props in movies, especially Westerns. When the dishes were used in The Andy Griffith Show or in Murder She Wrote, somehow my mind told me if I had those same dishes, my life would be as interesting and exciting as Aunt Bea's or Jessica Fletcher's. Raising four children as a stay-at-home mom fulfilled those wishes, I'm happy to report.

My Lovely Old Blue Willow Platter
I still remember the day I received the set from UPS. Lovingly, I took each dish from the box and washed them by hand. I suppose I've always loved playing house, but having these dishes brightened my time spent in the kitchen each day. I would glance at the two doves and be carried away to the plight of the two lovers. One day I changed my decor so the blue dishes had to go. Blue did not go with sage, somehow. I couldn't bear to let go of the set entirely, and thus saved one piece before selling the set in a garage sale.

Notice the Chinese design around the edges. Do you see the pagoda, bridge, boat, and two doves in flight? The story touches me whenever I use this  platter for serving food at parties.

Here's the story from Wikipedia if you've never heard it before.

The Romantic Fable: Once there was a wealthy Mandarin, who had a beautiful daughter (Koong-se). She had fallen in love with her father's humble accounting assistant (Chang), angering her father (it was inappropriate for them to marry due to their difference in social class). He dismissed the young man and built a high fence around his house to keep the lovers apart. The Mandarin was planning for his daughter to marry a powerful Duke. The Duke arrived by boat to claim his bride, bearing a box of jewels as a gift. The wedding was to take place on the day the blossom fell from the willow tree.
On the eve of the daughter's wedding to the Duke, the young accountant, disguised as a servant, slipped into the palace unnoticed. As the lovers escaped with the jewels, the alarm was raised. They ran over a bridge, chased by the Mandarin, whip in hand. They eventually escaped on the Duke's ship to the safety of a secluded island, where they lived happily for years. But one day, the Duke learned of their refuge. Hungry for revenge, he sent soldiers, who captured the lovers and put them to death. The Gods, moved by their plight, transformed the lovers into a pair of doves (possibly a later addition to the tale, since the birds do not appear on the earliest willow pattern plates).

Old Blue Willow will always be one of my favorites. I've linked three sites in blue to purchase if you're interested. What about you? Have you ever owned a set like mine?

Thanks for joining me today on COZY MYSTERY MAGAZINE.
Have a lovely weekend, dear readers.

See you in my books!
